T

ruth With A Camera Workshops have been around since 1994. That’s a while and longer than other similar workshops. We’ve gone through many changes but have always had the singular purpose of educating photojournalists how to use their cameras to promote social good and social change.

Today, our workshops continue in that vein while offering a global experience and immersion into the role nonprofits and NGOs play in our societies.

What makes our workshops so special?

We’d like to think it was our charm and personality but there are actually several other, and more important, aspects that make our workshops so unique and powerful:

  • We believe that to be responsible stewards of photojournalism education in foreign countries then we should also educate students there how to use their cameras to focus on the work being done by NGOs. We partner our US students with students from our host country and they work together on projects. When we leave, we want those host country students to continue their work.
  • We partner with NGOs in those countries and our students work on telling their stories. The access and stories are powerful. Check out the student work galleries to see for yourself.
  • We help those NGOs use the created images to communicate their missions better so that more people can become aware of their missions and help them to build the capacity they need to help more people.
  • We have a very low teacher to student ratio and therefore we are able to give each student the kind of attention and feed back they need to grow.

We run a survey after each workshop to gauge how we are doing and what we could do better. And by far the most cherished part of our workshops isn’t the physical act of making pictures, it is the relationships the students make with their international colleagues followed closely by the relationships they have with the agencies and organizations they work with.

In essence, what you need to bring to Truth With A Camera Workshops isn’t fancy gear but a yearning for learning how to use your camera and your heart, an openness to building relationships and a fundamental desire to leave this planet better than you found it.

Don’t come if all you want to do is build a portfolio, you wouldn’t be doing it for the right reasons.

Don’t come if you don’t know what depth of field is and how to control it.

Do come if you want to have a life experience you will always treasure.
